Frequently Asked Questions

Is the service confidential?

We believe that confidentiality is essential. We do not have a waiting room or a receptionist. You will only speak to your therapist or health practitioner, who will greet you when you arrive at your appointment.

All the psychotherapy and health services provided at Fairbairn House are confidential. Your identity and personal details will always be protected. No information will be disclosed to anyone without your written permission. The only exception your therapist will make is if they judge that there is a serious risk to you or others (including children) or if they are obliged to do so by law.

Scottish law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:

• If there is an intention to harm yourself, we will make every effort to enlist your cooperation in ensuring your safety and if needed, we will take further measures without your permission that are provided by law in order to ensure your safety, including contacting your GP.
• Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, for which we are required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
• If there is a threat of serious bodily harm to another person/s (including terrorist activity), wemust notify the police and inform the intended victim.

In the rare event that that your therapist breaks confidentiality they will will contact only those people who absolutely need to know.

Your therapist /health practitioner will be happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding confidentiality and data protection

How do I know which is the right therapy for me?

We understand that the choice of therapy can sometimes be confusing and we are happy to offer you a brief, confidential, telephone conversation to provide you with personalised suggestions which therapy or health practitioner would be the best match for your needs.

If you choose to contact us, please be assured that your message will only be read by one of our qualified, professionally accountable therapists, who will personally respond and arrange to speak with you, to help you identify your needs, and the options available, without any obligation or commitment.

All the therapists and health practitioners at Fairbairn House are ethically bound only to work within their area of competency. If we do not think that that the services we offer would be best to meet your needs, we will say so and where possible suggest an alternative service.

What are your fees?

Each therapist and health practitioner sets their own fees. Please contact the practitioner for details.

How accessible are your consulting rooms; Is there wheelchair access?

Our consulting rooms are spread over 3 floors of a historic, listed building. Although three of the consulting rooms are on the first and second floor with no lift, we will be happy to arrange to see you in our ground floor suite which has wheelchair access (although we regret no wheelchair accessible toilet). Please advise your therapist or health practitioner if you have any mobility difficulties or require additional assistance, so we can make appropriate arrangements.
