Health Psychology

Health Psychologists are specially trained practitioners who help people deal with the psychological and emotional aspects of health and illness. For instance, the day-to-day toll of having a health condition can cause a lot of stress. Preparing for, undergoing, and recovering from medical procedures or a recent diagnosis can have a significant impact on a person’s anxiety and ability to cope.

Health Psychologists can work with anyone, of any age or background. Some people work with Health Psychologists because they have an existing health condition, whilst others might be undergoing investigations or are newly diagnosed. Health Psychologists also work with people who want to increase their overall wellbeing or prevent ill-health and might want to change certain lifestyle behaviours, like stress, smoking, diet or exercise. For this reason, Health Psychologists often work closely with your health care providers and may ask your permission to contact those supporting your care.

Health Psychologists are trained in a number of different approaches which are recommended by clinical guidance. This includes approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused therapy (CFT), Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT), Person-Centred therapy (PCT), mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Together, you’ll discuss which approach may work best for you and what this involves.

Health Psychology can help with:
